Some form of ‘cutting’ is involved when preparing meals at home. However, if we only know the word ‘cut’, we may not be able to accurately follow the steps in English recipes.

1)Slice
Slice means to cut something into thin, flat pieces.
eg. Slice the mushrooms thinly and fry in butter.
2)Dice
Slice refers to cutting food into small squares.
Peel and dice the potatoes.
3)Mince
Mince means to cut food, especially meat, into very small pieces.
Mince two pounds of chicken finely.
4)Shred
Shred refers to cutting or tearing something roughly into thin strips.
Shred the lettuce and arrange it around the edge of the dish.
5)Grate
To grate something: to rub food against a grater in order to cut it into a lot of small pieces.
Grate the cheese and sprinkle on the pasta.
6)Chop
Chop is an act of cutting something with an axe, knife.
Chop the onions and carrots roughly.
7)Mash
Mash means to crush food, usually after cooking it, so that it forms a soft mass.
Mash the potatoes and then mix in the butter.
8)Cube
Cube is to cut food into cubes.
Cube the potatoes for later use.
