How does the introduction do in IELTS tests? When the examiner reads the introduction of your essay, they should already grasp what the rest of your essay will look like. Remember to be precise and concise!
Usually, the introduction paragraph has four sentences:
- Background statement
- Detailed background
- Thesis
- Outline
Let’s see how we apply this structure to our writing.
Example question:

1. Background statement: general things about the topic
In today’s world, the use of technology is ever-increasing.
2. Detailed background: more information about the topic
Even in classrooms technology can be commonly seen.
3. Thesis: a direct response to the question
It is disagreed that technology will entirely replace the teacher in the classroom.
4. Outline: what points best supports your thesis
Analyzing both the inability of a technology-driven teacher to discipline students as well as this robotic teacher’s hindrance to students’ learning process will show this.
