Last time we talked about synonyms of common adjectives in the IELTS tests. How many words have you added to your vocabulary bank? Here comes the second session of this series—-verbs.

 

1. Ask

Question: The students were questioned on the books they had been studying.

Demand: The union is demanding a seven percent pay rise this year.

Expect: We are expected to work on Saturdays.

Query: We queried the bill as it seemed far too high.

 

2. Begin

Start: The kids start school next week.

Launch: The official launch date is in May.

Initiate: The government has initiated a program of economic reform.

Originate: The disease is thought to have originated in the tropics.

 

3. Describe

Report: The article reports his journey to the North Pole

Narrate: She entertained them by narrating her adventures in Africa.

Characterize: The author characterized her personality effortlessly

Illustrate: The professor illustrated the point effectively.

 

4. Enjoy

Appreciate: Anyone can appreciate our music.

Delight in: They clearly take a delight in watching others suffer.

Indulge in: They went into town to indulge in some serious shopping.

Savor: It was the first chocolate he’d tasted for over a year, so he savored every mouthful.
