有好多英文單字都係可以有唔同嘅意思，例如係“apply”，可以係“申請”咁解，都可以解做“應用”。而好多時候DSE入面都會出現呢啲一詞多義嘅字，好多同學就係冇辦法掌握兩個唔同嘅意思導致失分。今日Wall Street English就要同大家介紹幾個可以同時作爲可數(countable)同不可數(uncountable)名詞但意思唔同嘅字。

 

1. Division

當division作爲可數名詞的時候，會解做”部門“的意思，但當其作爲不可數名詞時，意思是”分配“。

e.g.

  • Countable: I worked in the marketing division.
  • 可數名詞：我在營銷部門工作。
  • Uncountable: There is a clear division of labor in our team.
  • 不可數名詞：我們的團隊分工明確。

2. Company

衆所周知，company是“公司”的意思，不過只是作爲可數名詞的時候，當company成爲不可數名詞的時候，意思是“陪伴”。

e.g.

  • Countable: He works for an advertising company.
  • 可數名詞：他在一家廣告公司工作。
  • Uncountable: It was a long trip and I was grateful for his accompany.
  • 不可數名詞：這是一次長途旅行，我很感激他的陪伴。

3. Strength

當strength是可數名詞的時候，是”優點“、”長處“的意思，但作爲不可數名詞時會變成”力量“的意思。

e.g.

  • Countable: Leadership is one of his greatest strengths.
  • 可數名詞：領導力是他最大的優勢之一。
  • Uncountable: He had the strength and stamina to take the lead and win the gold medal.
  • 不可數名詞：他有實力和體力促使帶頭拿下金牌。

4. Business

Business除了有“公司”的意思，也有“生意”的意思。前者是其作爲可數名詞時之解，後者是當其為不可數名詞是的意思。

e.g.

  • Countable: My older sister runs her own business in Indonesia.
  • 可數名詞：我姐姐在印度尼西亞經營自己的生意。
  • Uncountable: Business is slack these days.
  • 不可數名詞：這幾天生意不景氣。

5. Pepper

大家所熟知的pepper也是解作“花椒粉”，這是不可數的，但當pepper是可數名詞時是解作“活力”、“膽量”。

e.g.

  • Countable: There was plenty of pepper left in the old man.
  • 可數名詞：這老人仍然精力充沛。
  • Uncountable: I’d like to add some pepper to the soup.
  • 我想往湯裏加點胡椒粉。
