“Not only…, but also…” is a correlative conjunction that we often see people used. But not a lot of people use it correctly. Do you know whether you are using it in the right way? 1. Not only …, but also …

I can speak English and Korean.

➝ Not only can I speak English, but I can also speak Korean.

 

2. Not until …

I realize I made a mistake until years later.

➝ Not until years later, did I realize I made a mistake.

 

3. Under no circumstances …

We should never give up.

➝ Under no circumstances should we give up.

 

4. Never before …

I have never been so offended.

➝ Never before have I been so offended.

 

5. Rarely / scarcely …

I have rarely / scarcely been this early.

➝ Rarely / Scarcely have I been this early.

 

6. No sooner …

It started to rain when we had gone out.

➝ No sooner had we gone out, it started to rain.

 

Although inversion is easy and good to use, remember not to overuse inversion in your writing or speaking as it will sound weird.
