Hi there! I’m LJ, from Wall Street English. Today, I’m going to talk about making and receiving phone calls at work.

1. Making Phone Calls

When you introduce yourself, you can say…

  • Good morning. This is LJ from Wall Street English. May I speak to…?
  • My name is LJ. I’m calling from Wall Street English. Can I speak to..?

When the person you want to talk to is not available, you can say…

  • Could you please tell him that I called?
  • Could you please ask him to call me back?
  • Could I leave him a message?
  • I’ll call again later.

When you end the phone call, you can say…

  • Thanks for your help. Good bye.
  • Thank you very much. Have a good day.

2. Receiving Phone Calls

When you answer the phone, you can say…

  • Good morning. Wall Street English. How may/can I help you?

If the caller doesn’t tell you his/her name, you can say…

  • May I have your name, please?
  • May I ask who’s calling?

After the caller makes a request, you can say…

  • Sure, let me check on that.
  • One moment please.
  • Just a moment please.
  • May I put you on hold for a minute?
  • Would you mind holding while I check on that?

When you want to take a message, you can say…

  • Berry isn’t available at the moment. Would you like to leave a message?
  • Berry is in a meeting right now. Can I take a message?
  • I’m afraid Mr. Berry is out of the office today. May I take a message?

When you need to deal with bad connections or wrong numbers, you can say…

  • I think we have a bad connection. Could you speak a little louder, please?
  • I’m afraid I can’t hear you very well. Could you repeat that, please?
  • I’m sorry. Could you repeat that?
  • I’m sorry. You have the wrong number.
  • I’m afraid there’s no one here by that name.

When you end the call, you can say…

  • Is there anything else I can help you with? … Okay. Thanks for calling. Have a great day.

If you are nervous about speaking English on the phone, you might want to prepare a script on what you need to say.

Okay. That’s it for today. See you next time.
